We believe that by telling the remarkable, true story of Harriet Tubman the whole country can be inspired, and healing can be brought about in a racially divided time. It is the story of a woman wounded and oppressed by slavery, but inspired by God to liberate herself. Later, she courageously led hundreds of fellow slaves from the evil of slavery to a new life of freedom. It is the story of one woman, who risked her life on her liberating missions, travelling through icy waters and the cold, wintry darkness.
It is the story of the Underground Railroad, and countless Quakers and abolitionists who joined hands with Harriet in the quest to abolish slavery. The play shows how Harriet's life was intertwined with many prominent figures from the 19th century, including: William Still, Thomas Garrett, Lucretia Mott, Frederick Douglass, John Brown and Susan B. Anthony. Additionally, each of the play’s 40 scenes is underlined by an original lyrical song, further telling the story of Harriet and her companions.
In short, it is the story of the transformative late 19th century, when Harriet Tubman reminded America of its soul: one nation in the God-given pursuit of freedom , justice and equality for all.
